Summary

The Slovakian Hound, or Slovenský kopov, is a compact, solidly built black-and-tan scenthound from Slovakia, bred to follow a warm trail for hours while giving tongue and to work on wild boar and predators. It has a short, dense coat with a strong undercoat, a lively, spirited temperament and an extraordinary sense of direction. Hardy and tireless in the field, it is also a good-natured and devoted family dog that needs plenty of exercise and scent work to be content. It is intelligent but independent, so it needs patient, consistent training and secure fencing.

History & origin

The Slovakian Hound is a native Slovak breed, developed from local hunting hounds and standardised in the twentieth century; its standard was published in 1963 and it has been recognised by the FCI ever since. Bred by foresters and hunters for tracking wounded game and hunting wild boar and predators, it was selected for a keen nose, a persistent voice on the trail and the endurance to work all day in rough, forested country. In its homeland it remains a respected working hound, and outside Slovakia it is kept as a hardy, versatile hunting companion and an active family dog.

Care

The Slovakian Hound's coat is short to medium in length, close-fitting and dense, with a strong undercoat that must never be lacking — a combination that protects it in cold and wet weather. Grooming is straightforward: a weekly brush keeps the coat clean and removes loose hair, and the breed sheds noticeably, especially in the seasonal moults. Ears, paws and eyes should be checked after working or walking in cover. This is an active scenthound that needs real daily exercise and, ideally, scent work, tracking or hunting to be happy; without enough to do it can become noisy and destructive. Intelligent but independent, it trains best with kind, consistent methods and early, thorough socialisation and recall training.

Conditions

The Slovakian Hound suits active owners who can offer daily exercise, outdoor life and, ideally, real scent work or hunting. It is good-natured and devoted to its family, generally sociable with people and other dogs, and it makes an alert watchdog, though like all hounds it can be vocal. Its powerful nose and hunting instinct mean it must never be allowed to roam and needs secure fencing and reliable recall. It adapts to a house with a garden far better than to a flat, dislikes being left alone for long, and can become bored and destructive without enough stimulation. With space, purpose and patient, consistent training, it is a hardy, cheerful and loyal companion.
